Getting Started with Maplify

A step-by-step walkthrough for your first search on Maplify — from finding a site to generating a shareable report.

Your First Search

  1. Open the map and search for an address, postcode or place name.
  2. Turn on the data layers relevant to your check — planning, environmental, heritage or Land Registry.
  3. Click anywhere on the map to see what a layer means for that exact location, explained in plain English.
  4. Draw or select a site boundary to measure area and check constraints across the whole site, not just one point.
  5. Generate a Planning Constraints Report or export a block plan to share your findings with colleagues or clients.
  6. Save the site to your Dashboard to track it and revisit it later.

Understanding Your Results

Each layer shows either a designation boundary (like Green Belt or a Conservation Area) or a point-based feature (like a listed building). Clicking any feature brings up a plain-English summary of what it means, its official source, and when it was last checked — so you always know exactly where a finding came from.

What to Do Next

Once you've identified the constraints affecting a site, our Planning Glossary can help you understand any unfamiliar terms, and our Site Constraints Checklist walks through the fuller due-diligence process from here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to create an account to search the map?

You can explore the map layers without an account, but creating a free account lets you save sites to your Dashboard and generate reports.

How many searches can I run for free?

Free accounts include a monthly allowance of search credits — see our Pricing page for the exact allowance on each plan.

What if I'm not sure which layers to turn on?

Start with the layer categories closest to your question — Planning, Heritage, Environment or Flood & Water — and expand from there. Our Planning Glossary explains what each designation means if a term is unfamiliar.
